Hello, dear readers! I’m back with another newsletter.
Can you believe that we’re less than 2 weeks away from the release of Reality TV for Snobs! It’s hard to believe. Why not do the origin story of the book?
THE YEAR IS 2023. Barbenheimer is shattering box office records. The Titan Submersible is…..shattered.
And I get an email from an editor at Quirk Books in August asking me if I’m available and interested in writing another installment in their Outsider Series. The Outsider Series are fun, snappy guides to all different kinds of media. Horror for Weenies was the first entry in the series and written by internet friend, Emily C. Hughes. So that was cool! Quirk Books specialized in gift books and their first hit was The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook!!!! When I was browsing Borders as a youth, those were always a worthy splurge.
At the same time, I was only 5 months out from my stem cell transplant to treat my leukemia. My immune system had been taken back to the factory settings, every day brought a new symptom or reaction, and I hadn’t written anything since the previous fall. It was probably my longest stretch without any work, assignments, or projects as an adult. I had nothing but spare time and brain fog.
In the words of RuPaul, my inner saboteur had me doubting if I was ready, if my brain could take it, and if writing a book was even something I wanted to do! I’d never written anything that long. My specialty was recaps, jokes, and the occasional sketch.
After conversations with my boyfriend, my family, and my closest friends, I obviously decided yes. If I wasn’t going to write Reality TV for Snobs, who would! I had been writing about reality TV for 10 years! I can do anything because I’m powered by equal parts ambition and delusion! Let’s fucking goooooo!!!
And like three years later - Reality TV for Snobs is about to be in the world! The story of writing and editing the book would be a good topic for a future newsletter or even a piece of content.
So let’s wrap this up!
